Frequently Asked Questions
What if I don't want to major in the sciences?
Please see Choosing a Major.
What courses should a premedical student take, and when should they be taken?
Please see Choosing a Major.
What should I do if I do not do well in Organic Chemistry?
Identify the reasons why you didn’t do well, in consultation with professor and advisors.
Consider multiple indicators (not just one class experience) as you continually update your career plans. All students should frequently reassess career plans each semester. Don’t give up on your original career plans too early, yet always keep other options in mind. Keeping one’s eyes wide open does not entail being unfocused, it just prevents tunnel vision!
If you withdrew or got a D or F grade in Organic Chemistry but it’s still relevant to your plans, try Organic Chemistry again in the summer or in the following school year as long as you’ve completed any necessary preparation to be successful.
Your grade in biochemistry, and your score on the Biological Sciences section of the MCAT, will be the keys to assure medical schools that you will be able to handle the curriculum despite the poor grade in Organic.
If I have something on my record (ie. an MIP), can I still apply to medical school?
Yes! Ms. Tricia Sharrar is a great person to consult with on this. She is a lawyer as well as the Director of PMED.
