Sophia University (Tokyo, Japan)
Sophia University is a Jesuit institution located in the heart of Tokyo, Japan. Sophia has a student population of over 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students; Sophia's faculty represent over 20 different nationalities. Sophia University has exchange agreements with over 120 partner institutions and weclomes more than 200 exchange students to their campus each year.
Eligibility: Minimum 3.0 Cumulative GPA upon submission of the CU Proposal to Study Abroad (no exceptions). Students must also meet all other Study Abroad Eligibility Requirements as outlined in Creighton's Study Abroad Policies & Procedures.
Financial Aid: Participants will pay tuition directly to Creighton University and receive the equivalent at Sophia University. Students will be responsible for all room and board fees (paid directly to Sophia University), and any traveling expenses. If eligible, institutional aid, federal financial aid, Tuition Remission, and Tuition Exchange (FACHEX) are portable. Please check with the CU Financial Aid Office for specific inquiries. Participants are also required to purchase Creighton's insurance for international activity (purchased through OIP).
Courses: Courses are taught in English and subject areas include: Anthropology, Art History, Theology, History, Political Science, Sociology, International Business, and Japanese language. Program Duration: Fall semester usually runs from mid-September to early-February. Spring semester usually runs from late-March to late-July. Because of Sophia's academic calendar, Creighton students may only choose to particpate for the entire academic year (September-July) or the spring semester (March-July).
On-Site Assistance: The Overseas Liaison Center at Sophia University will be happy to assist you during your stay. If notified in advance, they will pick you up from the airport. They also organize an orientation for all international & exchange students held prior to the start of classes. In addition, a class advisor is appointed to each student for support during your stay.
How to Apply: Students must first complete the CU Proposal to Study Abroad and the CU Study Abroad Course Approval Form (internal documents). Once these are complete, students will then receive the Sophia University (external document) from the Study Abroad Coordinator. Students who are chosen for participation will be notified and their application will be sent on to Sophia for final approval.
Deadlines: The CU Proposal to Study Abroad for Fall semester participation is due no later than March 1st and for Spring semester participation it is due no later than October 1st. However, because there are a limited number of spots on this program it is strongly recommend that interested students submit their CU Proposal to Study Abroad as early as possible.
