Plug-ins and Multimedia

With the help of ActiveX and Plug-ins, your browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Firefox, Opera, etc.) can do many more things. Some of the most popular add-ons are Flash, Shockwave, Quicktime, and RealPlayer. Please download and install these if you plan to use the interactive exercises and multi-media activities offered on the HLRC web pages.

Flash and Shockwave Players (Macromedia)
" Download Free Players". You can use your mouse and keyboard, of course, to do interactive, web-based exercises.

Quicktime (Apple)
is most often used for streaming or downloading video. The download progresses at the speed of your connection, i.e. if you want to watch a high-quality 4 Mb big movie, you may have to wait a few moments, or longer if you use a modem, but you can always watch the portion that is already downloaded into the cache of your browser, and once the movie is completly 'cached', you can watch it without any network congestion.

RealPlayer (Real Networks)
A real challenge to find the link to their FREE player. Follow this link to the free player, or try to find it yourself from their homepage. Unfortunately, you will have to register your player with them by opening an account. But it's for free if you reject all of their offers and their PLUS player. Here is a list of older versions. By using a dedicated streaming server, Creighton can stream RealPlayer audio and video at the highest speed possible, depending on the current network speed between your machine and Creighton. If you have a modem, the quality will be acceptable, but not as good as on campus or with a cable modem. The contents does not get 'cached'(unlike in Quicktime), so waiting for the download to complete does not improve the quality. On the other hand, you can listen or watch instantaneously.

Octoshape plug-in

Try the new octoshape plug-in (Win & Mac & Linus) to enjoy high quality TV & Radio "multiple-streaming". New in 2007

Adware / Spyware / Firewall

Adware Personal is free and the 'real' Spybot Search and Destroy (free, but donation suggested) should be installed on your computer to remove spy programs, tracking programs, and much more. Next try CCleanerr and Bitdefender to remove Malware, Spyware, Adware, and Viruses.

A Firewall like ZoneAlarm (free for personal use) protects your computers from unwanted in- and outgoing Internet traffic. It warns you if a program, a worm, etc. wants to gain access to the Internet from your machine, or wants to attack your machine. It also 'hides' many of your open ports.

CCleaner

nline malware/spyware/adware/virus removal tool.
