tutorial.

(For Older Version)
Part I - Planning (5-10 min.)
| A. For creating a web site with a variety of interactive
exercises and exercise types, it is important to take a few moments and
sketch out how you plan to organize your site.
You need an index.htm page. This will be the starting page, or Table of Contents, where a student can always find orientation. (you should create a new directory on the server exclusively for HP files. We'll do that later). |
B. Launch Netscape and open the Composer.
See
"http://www.creighton.edu/langlab/ws/wwwcrea1/ws1b.htm" for a quick intro on webpage creation. Create your webpage and transfer your sketch from paper to
|
Part II - Hot Potatoes Overview. (5 min.)
|
JBC is Multiple Choice JQuiz is Short Answer Quiz. JMix is Jumbled Sentence Exercise. JCross is Crossword Puzzle. JMatch is Matching Exercise. JCloze is Fill-in-the-Blank Exercise. |

Part III - Let's start with ...
Multiple Choice (JBC)
| A. Click on JBC. Each answer can be
supplied with an individual feedback. Take a moment to explore the menu
options, which you may use after the workshop.Give a title to the exercise,
then think about a question. You can type in as many answers as you
need. When you are ready for the next question, click on the black up-arrow
(see right).
For more answers, click on the red up-arrow (see right). Save your exercise FILE => SAVE and choose systematic naming conventions. Save the file again, this time FILE => EXPORT TO WEB. This option will creat a HTML file wich contains all the necessary JavaScript for interactivity! |
|
Short-Answer Quiz (JQuiz)
B. Click on JQuiz. Type a title, a question,
and possible correct answers. This format is tricky because you want
students to find the correct answer, yet it is an open question. To avoid
user frustration, you may supply a word list with the question, telling
the learner to use only those words in their answer. OR, you may
word your question in such a manner that the possible answers are not endless.
You still have to think of all possible correct solutions.
Just like with the JBC above, this module creates only 1 file for many
questions.
Jumbled Sentence Exercise (JMix)
| C. JMix creates 1 file for EACH exercise.
Therefore, I could name my 3 exercises 'adject3a', 'adject3b', etc. Click
on JMix, enter title and question.
Each segment of a sentence is separated with a hard return, i.e. press the 'ENTER' / 'Return' key. |

| In the ALTERNATE SENTENCES
section, you enter any other acceptable option. Keep the default checkmarks if you want the alternative to be acceptable even when the user does not use all segments: |

Note on Navigation: If you have, for example, jumbled sentence (JMix) exercises and you want the user to do them sequentially, then you must change the default navigation. 1. Choose OPTIONS => CONFIGURE OUTPUT, then choose the BUTTONS tab. Change the default name 'nextpage.htm' to e.g. 'adject3b.htm' which would be the second (b) adjective exercise after exercise one (a), if we stick with our naming convention from above.
Crossword Puzzle (JCross)
D. Click on JCross. From the menu, choose
MANAGE GRID => AUTOMATIC GRID MAKER. Enter the words for your crossword
puzzle and the program will try to include as many as possible. CAUTION:
if you accept the default 15 for maximum grid size, your final will be
best viewed on a 19" monitor. You may want to opt for a lower number,
however, the smaller the grid size, the fewer words can be accomodated.
Click on MAKE THE GRID.
| Let's add some clues for the students - click here
Hot Potatoes neatly displays all word by category (horizontal and vertical). Highlight a term, type in your clue in the window below, the hit 'OK'. Once your are done, FILE => SAVE your work then FILE => EXPORT it to
the web.
|
|
Matching Exercise (JMatch)
| E. Click on JMatch. Fill in the text you would
like your students to read on the left. The choices on the right
must be logical and match the text on the left. Be careful not to
include choices on the right that are correct more than once.
|

Next create the webpage by clicking on FILE=>CREATE WEBPAGE and choose your target audience. The following 2 images show the export options and the final output for "v5 browsers".
Fill-in-the-blank exercise (JCloze)
F. Click on JCloze. Type or 'copy & paste'
the text. Then highlight the words or part of the words (see endings
in red below) and click on "Gap". The red words or word endings will
be filled in by the student. When done, go FILE=>EXPORT TO WEB.
This time, there are fortunately no choices to be made with regard to the
target audience.
Part IV - How do I get my ecercises 'on the web'? (10
min.)
Find the WS-FTP program and lauch it by double clicking on the icon,
or by going to the START button, then PROGRAMS.
| A. Fill in Profile Name (anything goes)
B. Host Name: bluejay.creighton.edu Host Type: leave in Automatic detect C. User ID: Your Creighton Email Username

Do the same with all the exercise files '*.htm'. ==> If you already have a web page at Creighton on your bluejay account, make a new folder by clicking on 'MkDir'. Name it 'hotpot5'.
