J.D./M.S. in Information Technology Management

The main features of the program:

  • 12 hours of MS course work can be applied to the JD degree
  • 6 hours of JD course work can be applied toward the MS degree
  • In 1 of the last 4 law semesters, students may meet their residency requirements by taking 10 or more MS hours or by taking any combination of MS and JD courses, as long as the student is registered for at least 10 credit hours
  • It is possible to complete both degrees in 3 years, especially if the MS foundation course work has been completed

The MS Program requirements:

  • 27 hours of foundation course work (the typical undergraduate business student with a major in Management Information Systems will likely have fulfilled most, if not all, of these requirements, with the exception of ITM 523 and possibly computer programming)
  • 7 core MS courses, for a total of 18 hours
  • 3 elective MS courses, for a total of 15 hours (6 hours come from JD course work)
  • Students may elect Digital Business as an area of emphasis by taking ITM 710, 770, and 790 as MS electives

The JD Program requirements:

  • 34 hours of first-year required courses
  • 22 hours of upperclass required courses
  • 38 hours of electives (must include Law 397, Legal Issues In E-Commerce; up to 12 hours may also come from eligible MS course work)
  • 5 semesters carrying at least 10 hours of JD course work
  • 1 semester carrying at least 10 hours of course work in the MS program or a combination of MS and JD courses; however, full-time law school tuition is required for this semester

Students must apply to the two programs (JD and MS) separately.

Financial Implications:

  • Students pay the regular full-time law school tuition for 6 semesters
  • Students pay the law school summer tuition rate for JD courses taken in the summer
  • Students pay the regular hourly rate for 27 MS hours, including the MS hours taken in the sixth semester
  • This represents a significant tuition savings against what would be paid if the degrees were pursued separately
  • JD/MS students are eligible to apply to the MS program for scholarship aid (including tuition waiver)
  • JD/MS students are eligible to apply for Law School scholarships
