Zenola M. Hilliard, '79, of Pine Bluff died July 27, 2009. She began her legal career at Omaha Legal Aid Society, and then moved to Pine Bluff. She was a former “Reginald Heber Smith Fellowship Attorney” with Central Arkansas Legal Services 1979-1981. For the next twenty years 1982-2002, she headed her own law firm in Pine Bluff – the Hilliard Law Office. In 2002, she returned as a staff attorney to the Pine Bluff office of the Center for Arkansas Legal Services until 2009. She served as attorney for the City of Reed, Arkansas 1988-1997 and the Westside Sewer Improvement District No. 35 1989-1998. She was Municipal Judge of Gould, Arkansas 1998-2001. She was a member of VOCALS and a pro bono volunteer attorney during her years in private practice. She was a member of the Jefferson County Bar Association and Arkansas Bar Association. She is survived by her husband, R.L. Tisdale. She touched the lives of so many in her community state. Zenola’s life stood as a testament to the cause of justice and the right of every citizen, regardless of their financial means, to have access to the justice system.

Vogt and Fowler serve as hosts of the weekly radio show, “Ask a Lawyer,” which airs on Omaha’s KIOS-FM public radio channel. Law Grad Accepts Clerkship With Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas
OMAHA, Neb. – Patrick Strawbridge, a 2004 graduate of Creighton University’s School of Law, has accepted a clerkship with U. S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, effective July 2008.
“This is, of course, terrific news for Patrick who was an extraordinary student and is an extraordinary human being ,” said Creighton Law Professor G. Michael Fenner, J.D. “It is great news for Creighton as well. With Patrick, our law school joins the list of the relatively few whose graduates have clerked on the nation’s high court.”
Strawbridge participated in a Supreme Court seminar in 2003 taught by Justice Thomas and Professor Fenner. Thomas and Fenner teach the week-long seminar every other year at Creighton University.
“I feel very fortunate to have this kind of opportunity and feel it is a great honor to serve as a clerk for Justice Thomas. I owe Creighton and all of my professors there for providing me with the education that made this clerkship possible,” said Strawbridge.
After graduating first in his class, Strawbridge accepted a one-year clerkship with the Honorable Howard Dana of the Supreme Judicial Court of Maine. He then clerked for the Hon. Morris Sheppard Arnold of the U.S. Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Strawbridge was recently named an associate in the Portland, Maine, office of Preti Flaherty as part of its litigation practice group. He is licensed to practice in Maine and Connecticut.

SNYDER PROMOTED TO ASSOCIATE A.D.
AMES, Iowa – Josh Snyder, a member of the Iowa State University Athletics Department since 2003, has been promoted to Associate Athletics Director for Compliance. This is Snyder’s second ISU promotion after being hired as Director of Compliance in 2003. Snyder remains responsible for coordinating, implementing and evaluating all facets of Iowa State’s athletics compliance program, including the education, monitoring and investigation components. His office is responsible for ensuring rules compliance with all NCAA, Big 12 Conference and Iowa State University rules and regulations.
“Josh has done excellent work for Iowa State University on a number of fronts and it’s certainly appropriate to recognize and reward good performance,” Pollard said. “His knowledge of compliance and professional relationships with staff at both the Big 12 and NCAA is important to our everyday operations. Josh is an Iowa State alum, and we believe this promotion underlines our desire to keep him in the Cyclone family.”
Snyder graduated from Iowa State University with a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Sciences in 1995. While at ISU, Snyder was a student ambassador for the Alumni Association, served as Vice-President of the Pep Council and worked three seasons (1991-94) as a football equipment manager. He continued his education at Creighton and earned his Juris Doctorate in 2001. Snyder has been admitted to practice before all Nebraska State and Federal Courts. He earned “First in Class” designations for both Legal Interviewing and Contracts and was President of the school’s Sports and Entertainment Law Society.
Snyder worked previously at the University of South Dakota, serving as an Assistant and Associate Athletics Director (2001-03) with supervisory responsibilities in the areas of compliance and student services. He also worked one year (2000-01) as a compliance assistant at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
Prior to moving into the compliance arena, Snyder gained experience in sales and operations for several professional sports teams, including the Omaha Flames (1997-98), Omaha Racers (1996-97) and Sioux City Explorers (1995-96).
GLASS HIRED TO BE NEW PROSECUTOR

A 1993 graduate of Archbishop Bergan Catholic High School began his first day as a deputy prosecutor in the Dodge County Attorney’s office Monday.
Ollie Glass, 31, will initially assist in the caseload of Deputy Dodge County Attorney Mark Boyer and prosecute misdemeanor and traffic violations in Dodge County Court. He also will prosecute some misdemeanor charges in juvenile court.
With the hiring of Glass, there are now five attorneys, including Dodge County Attorney Paul Vaughan, in the office.
Glass graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1999 with a teaching degree in social studies. After graduating he taught American and world history for three years at Lincoln Pius X High School.
“The legal field was something I’ve always been interested in,” Glass said. “I don’t think I had the self-confidence (to become a lawyer) until later in life.”
He began law school in 2002 at Creighton University and graduated in May 2005. After passing the Nebraska Bar exam, he was sworn in as an attorney last month just before interviewing for the job in Vaughan’s office.
“The day before my interview, I found out I passed the bar,” Glass said.
In addition to clerkships in estate, immigration and civil law, he also was a law clerk in the Dodge County Attorney’s Office last year.
“He will help us handle the increasing caseload we’ve been experiencing over the last couple of years,” Vaughan said. “When you have someone who’s familiar with the community, it’s easier for them to understand and get a mental picture (of cases and crimes).”
Vaughan said he reviewed more than 30 resumes and interviewed eight candidates before deciding on his new deputy.

Martin V. Klein, JD’01, a native of Elgin, is an attorney with the Norfolk law firm of Jewell, Collins, DeLay and Flood. Klein is engaged in general law practice, and also specializes in real estate, civil litigation, estate planning, criminal defense and family law. Klein earned his bachelors degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, and graduated from Creighton University School of Law in 2001. He has been with the Norfolk firm since December 2005.
Charles L. Kuper, JD’02, has become an associate at the law firm of Berens & Tate. He has a background in workers’ compensation defense. A graduate of Knox College, he received his law degree from Creighton University School of Law. His practice will focus on the defense of employers and insurance carriers in workers’ compensation matters throughout Nebraska.
Kris Gates, JD’01, recently accepted an Associate General Counsel position with Banner Health. Gates will be providing legal services to the Western Region of Banner Health, including Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, Nevada and Alaska. Gates was an attorney with the law firm of Erickson & Sederstrom, P.C. for the previous five years.
