Greetings and thank you for your interest in our program! Now, more than ever, family physicians are being called upon to provide comprehensive maternity care in underserved rural and urban communities. This unique fellowship was created in 2015 with the goal to provide family physicians with the skills to competently serve these communities in need and to develop their skills as faculty physicians.

The fellowship’s founding director, James F. Smith, MD, served as chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 2011-2017, and he shepherded the development of this program within the Family Medicine Department under the supervision of Amy McGaha, MD.

Three organizations sponsor the fellowship: CHI Health, Creighton University and Charles Drew Health Center.

The majority of labor and delivery experience occurs at CHI Health Immanuel Medical Center and CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center–Bergan Mercy under the supervision of board-certified OB-GYN physicians. As a major regional health network, CHI Health also offers fellows the opportunity to experience obstetrical care in more rural settings within the network.

The fellowship is sponsored academically by Creighton University. Since the School of Medicine was founded in 1892, Creighton has dedicated significant time and effort training and developing physicians. While fellows will undoubtedly graduate the program with stellar obstetrical skills, scholarly activity under the supervision of experienced professors and faculty development as a teacher within the Department of Family Medicine are invaluable parts of this experience.

We are also very fortunate to be partnered with Charles Drew Health Center. Founded in 1983, this federally qualified health center has become a safety net for Omaha families in need. Here, the fellows spend one day per week, split evenly between family medicine patients and continuity OB patients. It is an integral part of the fellowship, and we are thankful that our trainees have the opportunity to learn from this organization and the communities they serve.

Within the halls of the above organizations, fellows can expect to develop strong skills in the management of routine and complicated pregnancies, to strengthen leadership skills and to continue to develop as physicians dedicated to lifelong learning and service.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you!
