Twenty working days of vacation are allowed annually. Vacation time cannot be carried over into the next year.
There is a maximum of thirty (22 weekdays and 8 weekend days) sick days per year. Unused sick leave is not carried over into the next year.
Seven days (five weekdays and one weekend) of educational leave is provided to House Staff Physicians beyond their first year of training. Educational leave is in addition to vacation leave. Funding availability is determined at the program level.
American Psychiatric Association (APA)
Annual membership dues for the APA are paid by the program. Membership in the APA offers a full array of benefits for Members-In-Training.
Basic & Advanced Cardiac Life Support Courses
BCLS and ACLS certification is required of all new House Staff Physicians. BCLS and ACLS courses are provided at no charge to the House Staff Physicians. The costs of books are the responsibility of the House Staff Physician.
Cellular Phone Discount
The House Staff Physicians are eligible to receive the corporate discount rate given to University employees to purchase a cellular phone and air time through Verizon.
Child Care Center
The James R. Russell Child Development Center is located on the Creighton campus. The Child Care Center is open to children six weeks to five years of age. The Center is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with the exception of University holidays. Visit ther Website for additional information.
Health Sciences Library
The Creighton Health Sciences Library and Learning Resources Center provides provides immediate access to biomedical information. Such services include a state-of-the-art computer lab and on-line electronic information available 24 hours a day. Current benefit coverage is provided as part of the House Staff Agreement (Contract) reference Exhibit A of the Agreement. The University’s annual benefit review is conducted on a calendar year basis.
- Liability Insurance (Malpractice) -
The University provides liability insurance (malpractice) for the House Staff Physicians in the amount of $1,000,000/$3,000,000. The policy is a claims-made policy with an automatic reporting endorsement (tail coverage). In addition to the main insurance, all physicians of Creighton University also participate in the Nebraska Excess Fund. Please see moonlighting section for additional information regarding liability coverage for moonlighting.
Kiewit Fitness Center (KFC)
Kiewit Fitness Center, a top-notch Fitness Center located on the campus of Creighton University, is easily accessible from the Hospital. The House Staff Physician is eligible for half-price membership fee subsidy. The stipulation to be eligible for this subsidy is the house staff pysician must use the facilities a minimum of eight times per month. In addition to the subsidy offered by the Creighton University Human Resources, the Graduate Medical Education Office will subsidize an additional $40.00 (annually) towards the House Staff Physician’s membership.
Creighton University Medical Center's Fitness Room
Located inside of CUMC Hospital is a Fitness Room that is accessible 24 hours a day. The Fitness Room includes stationary bikes, treadmills, stair-stepper machines, and free weights. There is a nominal annual fee of $20.00 to join.
Three laboratory coats are provided at the beginning of the House Staff Physicians postgraduate training. House Staff may receive one new coat yearly by request and by exchanging a worn coat. Additional coats may be purchased by the House Staff Physician through the Graduate Medical Education Office.
Maternity & Paternity Leave
Maternity and Paternity Leave is granted in accordance with the “Family Medical Leave Act”.
The Parental Leave Policy became effective May 1, 2012. Birth or adoption events on May 1 or after would be eligible for benefits under the policy.
To be eligible for paid parental leave, the House Staff must have been employed by the University in a benefit-eligible status during the entire 12-month period immediately prior to the birth or adoption of a child. In the case where both parents are Creighton employees, both are eligible for this leave.
Eligible House Staff will have four (4) weeks of paid leave for birth or adoption. This time is above and beyond sick and vacation time, which can also be coordinated with the paid parental leave as well as short-term disability benefits. Parental leave runs concurrent with FMLA time. This time must be used during the first 12 weeks following the birth or adoption of a child. For adoptive parents, the leave may begin at the time the employee travels to a destination to obtain the adoptive child.
Creighton offers $6.00 per day for meals; this amount does not roll over. A $5.50 per day lunch card is provided for use at the Nebraska Medical Center, weekdays from 11AM to 5PM. Daily funds do not roll over. At the VA, you are given a lump sum for lunch money each month you are on rotation at the VA. It DOES roll over until the end of the academic year. The residents rotating at the Immanuel Medical Center are provided with a $5 per meal card that covers breakfast, lunch and dinner at that site. On call meal allowances are not provided.
House staff physicians are not required to moonlight.
Upon approval and following institutional and program guidelines, house staff physicians beyond their second year of training may moonlight providing they obtain the appropriate permanent State Medical License. With proper authorization, malpractice insurance provided by Creighton University covers house staff moonlighting in the State of Nebraska. Moonlighting outside the State of Nebraska is permissible providing proper authorization is obtained. The house staff physician is responsible for obtaining their own liability coverage for moonlighting performed outside the State of Nebraska. All moonlighting hours are to be logged as part of program duty hours.
Residents/fellows with J1 visas are prohibited from moonlighting. House staff may not moonlight while on sick leave or while on FMLA.
The University has an agreement with affiliated hospitals to provide adequate parking space for the House Staff Physicians at no charge.
Personal Computer Discount
The House Staff Physician may purchase a personal computer, at the educational rate, through the University Purchasing Department vendor Govconnection. Additional Microsoft Software can be purchased at the educational discount rate through the Dividion of Information Technology (DoIT) e-Academy store. In addition, the Creighton Bookstore provides some additional software programs at an educational rate and if requested and available, can special order software upon request.
The House Staff Physician is eligible to defer their own monies into the Creighton University's 403(b) Retirement Plan. This is a great opportunity to begin a Retirement Savings Plan. Salary Deferral: The House Staff Physician taxable income is reduced by the amount you contribte through salary deferral. This lets you reduce your current income taxes. Salary deferral contributions cannot exceed 90% of the House Staff Physician salary. The maximum deferral percentage and/or dollar amount may also be limited by IRS regulations. The Retirement Plan is administered through Principal. The House Staff Physician's contribution is automatically deducted from the paycheck on a monthly basis. The House Staff Physician is eligible to defer into the plan at anytime, you are not restricted to a specific time period. House Staff Physicians are not eligible for employer matching contributions.
