Post-Pediatrics Portal Fellows

Robert Ellis

Photo of Robert EllisDr. Bob Ellis went to medical school at Wayne State, did his pediatric residency at Wright State, and completed a pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship at Johns Hopkins. He retired from the Air Force in January of 2007 after over 20 years of clinical practice. In addition to clinical duties, he also had positions as a residency program director, traveling practice management consultant, health plan medical director, and academic department chairman. He held academic appointments as Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University, and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. After he retired from the military, he practiced as a general pediatrician in an underserved rural area. His practice became heavily weighted toward psychiatric issues as mental health care was otherwise unavailable in the community. He did his best to care for these patients, and found this to be the most interesting and enjoyable part of his practice. When he heard about the post-peds program, he thought it sounded perfect for him. He closed his general pediatric practice in December 2007 and spent the subsequent 6 months working in a child neurology clinic, where he learned a lot about autism, ADHD, migraines, seizures, and sleep disorders. He has moved here from San Antonio with his wife, Shelley. She is a retired elementary school teacher. They have two small dogs (Italian greyhound and schnauzer) and three grown kids living in New York and Los Angeles. While living in San Antonio, Dr. Ellis learned to speak Spanish fairly well. He enjoys Hispanic literature and culture and he is an avid fan of telenovelas.
