Doll Best in Show

The Rev. Don Doll, SJ, won Best in Show at the 2022 Regional Photography Biennial at Gallery 1516 in downtown Omaha with his photograph titled Tamil Refugee.

“I am deeply honored by the recognition because it focuses on this work with refugees and those in dire situations around the world,” Fr. Doll said of the recognition. “My process always includes prayer at the beginning of each day of photography, that I can recognize the humanity and help tell the story of each person encountered that day. I like to work very closely to people to create an empathy and recognize our kinship as children of God.”

The Regional Photography Biennial showcases artistic talent of photographers from the seven-state region of Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, South Dakota and Wyoming.

Diego Uchitel, a renowned photographer and one of the jurors of the exhibition, said that Fr. Doll’s photo of a refugee in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, captured top honors because “the shot creates conversation and shares a story with depth – the essence of photography is in that image.”

There were more than 1,000 entries into the showcase, from artists aged 15 to 87.

The 93 pieces of artwork chosen for the exhibition represent a variety of photographic styles. Categories of work include abstract/conceptual, animals, city/street, landscape, nature, people, photojournalism and still life.

The 2022 Regional Photography Biennial at Gallery 1516 runs through Jan. 29, 2023. The gallery is located at 1516 Leavenworth St. and is open to the public Wednesday- Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
