Distance Student Success

Welcome

Welcome to Creighton University and the Distance Education Student Orientation. We want you to be a part of the Creighton campus experience whether online or in person.  This orientation will help you understand the Mission and Identity of Creighton and the Jesuit tradition, how to be a successful online student, rules and policies, how to use the Learning Management System (LMS), and some helpful links to student resources at Creighton. You will also get a sense of how the online courses will work by going through the orientation, thus giving you a good foundation for the courses in your program.  A week or two before your course, you will need to dedicate 2 to 3 hours a day for one week for this orientation in order to complete it before your first course. Your feedback about this orientation is most welcome! Step 2: Read "Successful Online Student at the link below filled with excellent information and a pdf version to save for future reference.
Step 3: Go through the Learning Management System (LMS) tutorial at the link below.
Step 4: As a student accepted in your program you have been automatically enrolled in the Distance Student Orientation in the LMS (Learning Management System) and all you need to do is follow the link below and use your NetID number and password to log in.

 

What to Expect from the Student Orientation

  • A Successful Student Online – Online or distance learning is a unique way of learning. This section of the orientation will be of great value with information on Computer Literacy (Tech Tutorials) and Time Management Tips. You will also find information and directions for The NEST (Nearly Every Student Transaction), e-Tutoring (peer tutoring) and Creighton Libraries (e-Reserves).
  • How to Use the LMS (Learning Management System) –Blueline2 is the Universities learning management system and is used for all online courses. This section will give you directions for a link to the “Help” tutorial for Blueline2 and a sample course to help you practice a few important elements that must be successfully used in order to do well in your courses.
  • Online Readiness Assessment – In the LMS you will find a link to an online learning readiness assessment.  The assessment will help you prepare to be successful as a student in the online environment and it takes about 35 – 45 minutes to complete. You will then receive a report of your scores and resources to assist distant learners.
  • Creighton Mission and Identity – Welcome to the Mission and Jesuit Identity! Here you will learn about Creighton’s mission, St. Ignatius, the Jesuits, and the Ignatian Values which are an integral part of everything and everyone. 
  • Rules of the Road – In order to drive successfully through your distance courses a few rules are necessary. You will find information concerning Netiquette, Key University Policies and Procedures, the Student Handbook, using CU e-mail (a must), and Tech Requirements. In addition you will find links to the COOL (Creighton Office of Online Learning – distance education information) web site, the Graduate School (registration, withdrawal, graduation, etc.) web site, the AEP policy, and the ADA policy.
  • Student Resources – Finally, we have a list of student resources and their links to various sites on the Creighton web site/campus. This will be your quick access page to the resources you will need such as the Book Store, Financial Aid, Card Services, CU Calendar, Bulletins, Student Organizations, and much more.
