Search Committee Update

The search committee met last week to discuss progress on the search for Creighton’s 25th president. The search is on track with qualified candidates keenly interested in the position. As is the case in a search at this level, a heightened sense of confidentiality provides interested candidates with freedom to pursue the opportunity without prematurely generating disruption for their institutions.

The Prospectus has served to define and crystallize the opportunity at Creighton both on paper and in the minds of candidates. Likewise, the listening sessions have provided valuable insights for candidates and were welcomed by them.

This is important because attracting the right leader who is suited for the challenge is a two-way street—the leader must be energized by the opportunity and the committee must be enthused about the candidate’s preparedness for the position.

Our search consultant, Presidio Executive Search, has brought forth relationships with candidates who are Jesuit and lay, male and female, and who are Catholic. Moreover, they are fully capable to carry out the Jesuit and Catholic mission of Creighton University, and each is exceptionally qualified academically. The diversity of backgrounds and capabilities provides clear contrast and distinction for each candidate.

The search committee considers each step of the search process to be essential as Creighton embarks on connecting deeply with its mission and energizing the members of the Creighton community with a passion for the possibilities ahead.

Creighton Presidential Prospectus

Dear Members of the Creighton Community:

A Creighton Presidential Search Prospectus has been prepared by Lisa Prigohzy-Milius, principal of Presidio Executive Search. It includes an overview of the University, a narrative of opportunities and challenges, and a description of the desired experience and attributes sought in the next president.

The document was generated from the findings of the Listening Sessions of students, faculty, staff, deans, VPs, members of the Creighton Society of Jesus, alumni, and the board of trustees. It serves as a specification for the position and describes the opportunity in order to attract and inform potential candidates and others who may want to encourage or advance the name of a person who might be a suitable candidate.

We appreciate the hard work of the many members of the Creighton community who have helped Presidio Executive Search create this document. The work now shifts to focus on generating a worthy pool of candidates.

Results of Listening Sessions

Dear Members of the Creighton Community:

During April, May and June, listening sessions were conducted across the Creighton community to gather feedback on the qualifications and characteristics we should seek in the 25th president of Creighton University. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we would like to thank all who conducted and participated in the listening sessions. This input will be valuable as we begin to identify and assess prospective candidates.

To share with you more detail regarding the feedback that emerged, below are one-page summaries for the respective constituent group listening sessions, as well as a summary of feedback themes that emerged from those who participated in these sessions:

The Board of Trustees welcomes additional feedback regarding the qualifications for the University’s next president. If you have comments to share, please feel free to contribute your thoughts.

We would also like to express our particular appreciation to William Leahy, S.J., president of Boston College. Father Leahy conducted a listening session with members of the Creighton Jesuit Community and has spent time with the provincial of the Wisconsin Province discussing Creighton’s needs and the collective desire to consider the best possible candidates for our University. As a member of our Search Committee, and as a member of the Creighton Board of Trustees, Father Leahy will be interfacing with both groups as the search progresses.

What is clear thus far from the input received is that the Creighton community cares deeply about the University’s future. It is our collective goal to recruit a superb next president for the University, and we are confident that the feedback shared will be invaluable in doing so.

Input from the Creighton community helps provide a solid foundation for the search. Through the listening sessions, one central theme has emerged: the Creighton community is aware of the unique value Creighton provides across many aspects of society as a result of our university’s unique blend of rigor, caring and competent personal development.

Thank you for all you do for Creighton University.

Search Firm Selected

Dear Members of the Creighton Community:

After canvassing a number of search firms, the Presidential Search Committee has voted unanimously to select Presidio Executive Search of San Francisco, Calif., to assist in identifying and recruiting the next president of Creighton University. The firm’s founder and managing director is Lisa Prigohzy-Milius and she will conduct the search.

What separated her and Presidio from the other firms was her commitment to the process aimed at deeply understanding the needs of the entire Creighton community and using the criteria in casting a wide net to identify and recruit the right candidates for consideration.

Her work is now underway ranging from an initial campus visit to examining preliminary data this summer that includes examining the perspectives gathered from the listening sessions that have been conducted since the search was announced in mid-April to interviews with specific leaders across campus.

Prigohzy-Milius has a track record of working with respected institutions similar to Creighton. She understands the importance of mission and the institution’s commitment to community—students, faculty, staff, alumni, and all stakeholders that make a place like Creighton unique and special.

While many firms were considered, a major influence in selecting Presidio is how the firm views its role in the process as described in its presentation: “This is not an opportunistic field of endeavor; we are philosophically committed to the ideals and missions of educational institutions.”

Listening Sessions Underway

Dear Members of the Creighton Community:

During April we announced the first phase of the Presidential Search. The first order of business is to identify what members across the Creighton community see as essential characteristics and credentials in our next President.

Toward this objective leaders from the faculty, alumni, students, deans, staff and administration are scheduling listening sessions. These sessions are ongoing and are intended to obtain input from across all Creighton communities with respect to the credentials and characteristics desired in the 25th President of Creighton University.

The sessions are designed to stimulate dialogue in four broad areas of focus: (a) academic qualifications, (b) leadership qualifications, (c) personal attributes, and (d) professional characteristics and experience. Questions posed in each of these areas include: Are the prior qualifications utilized in the last search still relevant? Should they be preferences or requirements? And should they evolve?

Live meetings will continue with leaders gathering data and submitting their findings by mid-summer. Additionally, an online input gathering process will begin this summer and extend indefinitely. We will provide details about that on this site next month.

Thank you for your interest and participation.

04/14/14 - Search Committee Meets

Presidential Search Announced

Dear Members of the Creighton Community:

With the recent news of Father Timothy Lannon’s planned retirement in 2015, the Board of Trustees is embarking on the search for the 25th President of Creighton University. The journey will not be simple or brief. It is a process of discovery and discernment. It is a responsibility the Board of Trustees takes very seriously.

The goal is to identify and recruit a qualified leader. This search comes at an interesting time in the 136-year history of Creighton University. In many ways, we all know Creighton has much to celebrate and embrace. We are truly fortunate. In other ways, Creighton is confronted with many of the same challenges facing higher education across the land.

The first task is to identify what the Creighton community as a whole sees as essential characteristics and credentials in our next President. The second phase will be centered on the search for this individual for which an equally rigorous effort will be required.

This website will assist communications of this endeavor. It is one of several means to both inform and engage Creighton’s many constituents: students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, benefactors, neighbors and friends. We invite you to use it as a source of information with respect to status of the search and significant developments when they occur.
