Creighton’s Speech and Debate Team Performs Well at National Tournament

Creighton University’s State Champion Speech and Debate team had a successful outing at the National Forensic Association National Tournament last week in Wisconsin. Two team awards are given at the event and Creighton placed second in the debate category while finishing ninth in the individual events portion of the President’s II Division. Students also did well individually with results listed below:

• Sarah Hinrichs, Senior, Arts and Sciences, from Grand Island, NE, Quarter Finalist in Informative Speaking

• Danny Reeker , Junior, Arts and Sciences, from Norfolk, NE, Quarter Finalist in Extemporaneous Speaking

• Mark Utterback, Senior, Arts and Sciences, from Ralston, NE, Double Octafinalist in Lincoln-Douglas Debate

• Ashley Hinck , Freshman, Arts and Sciences, from Mount Pleasant, MI, Double Octafinalist in Lincoln-Douglas Debate

• David Skoglund, Sophomore, Arts and Sciences, from Oletha, KS, Double Octafinalist in Lincoln-Douglas Debate

• Mike Storey, Freshman, College of Business, from Omaha, NE, Octafinalist in Lincoln-Douglas Debate

• Matt Steele, Senior, Arts and Sciences, from Leavenworth, KS, Quarter Finalist in Lincoln-Douglas Debate

• Jon Kohlscheen, Sophomore, Arts and Sciences, from Omaha, NE, Finalist and Second Place finish in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

The team won the Nebraska state championship in February.

Speech and debate is a co-curricular activity that teaches communication and public speaking skills through the performance of individual events (platform, interpretive, and limited preparation speaking events) and debate (Parliamentary and Lincoln-Douglas).
