Speech and Debate Team Wins State Championship

Creighton Universityís speech and debate team won the 2006 Overall Team Sweepstakes Championship at the Nebraska Intercollegiate Forensic Association State Tournament held in Lincoln, Neb., Feb. 17-19.

Throughout the weekend, the team managed to take home seven state championship awards in both an individual and team effort.

Arts and Sciences senior Molly McCartney was the team leader in individual first-place finishes. She won state titles in prose interpretation, oral interpretation, and after-dinner speaking.

Other team members winning individual state titles were Arts and Sciences senior Sarah Hinrich for informative speaking; and Arts and Sciences junior David Skoglund for his Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Also being recognized for his efforts was Marty Birkholt Ph.D., director of Forensics, who was awarded the 2006 Distinguished Service Award by the Nebraska Intercollegiate Forensics Association.

With a state title under their belts, the team will once again hit the road to compete in Florida for the American Forensics Associationís national title on April 6-9.
