Creighton University Honors Founders

Creighton University is celebrating Founders Week Feb. 5-12, 2006.

This year Founders Week begins with a mass on Sunday, Feb. 5, at 10:30 a.m., in St. John's Church on the Creighton campus.

The eight-day series of events embraces every facet of the university community, including its students, faculty, friends and staff. The celebration honors Creightonís founding family and highlights the achievements of the present and past while looking toward the future.

The Leadership Recognition Day is Monday, Feb. 6, at 3:30 p.m. This event will be held in the V.J. and Angela Skutt Student Center Ballroom. Leadership Recognition Day is sponsored by Omicron Delta Kappa and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. At 5:30 p.m., the Faith and Pasta dinner, sponsored by Campus Ministry, will be held in Lower St. Johnís Church.

On Tuesday, Feb. 7, the 20th Annual Arts and Sciences Faculty Awards Luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. Later in the afternoon, Fr. Schlegel will host the Presidentís Convocation at 4 p.m. in St. Johnís Church. During convocation 11 faculty members will be promoted to emeritus status and 23 faculty members will receive the 25-year service awards.

Thomas J. Purcell III, J.D., Ph.D., associate professor of accounting and professor of law, will receive the Distinguished Faculty Service Award, and John E. Pierce, J.D., special assistant to the president for diversity and outreach and director of affirmative action, will receive the Distinguished Administrator Service Award, during Creighton University's Founders Week Convocation on Tuesday Feb. 7, 2006.

Fr. Schlegel will also announce two new holders of existing chairs. Amy M. Haddad, Ph.D. will be named the Dr. C.C. and Mabel L. Criss Endowed Chair in Health Sciences, and the Rev. Dennis M. Hamm, S.J., will be named The Amelia B. and Emil G. Graff Faculty Chair in Catholic Theological Studies.

Later that evening, students can bring their questions to the Fireside Chat with Fr. Schlegel, at 8 p.m. in the Student Center by the fireplace lounge.

The College of Business Colloquium and Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Center, room 104.

On Thursday, Feb. 9, the Mary Lucretia and Sarah Emily Creighton Awards Luncheon will be at 11:30 a.m. in the Student Center. This yearís recipients are Susan A. Calef, Ph.D., assistant professor of theology, and Martha J. Gentry-Nielsen, Ph.D., professor of medical microbiology and immunology.

Later in the afternoon, the annual School of Nursing Retreat: Making Successful Connections will be from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Criss II, room 217. The Founders Feast for Students will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.

The Graybackers Luncheon will be on Friday, Feb. 10, at 11:30 a.m. This year the luncheon will be held at the Michael Morrison S.J., Stadium.

Two conference basketball games help conclude a week of events. The Creighton menís basketball team will square off with conference rival Southern Illinois at Qwest Center Omaha on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 1:05 p.m. On Sunday, Feb. 12, at 3:05 p.m., the womenís basketball team will take on Drake at the Civic Auditorium.
