Dentists Tee Up to Defray Cost of Dental Care for Those Who Need it Most

In an effort to continue to provide dental care for those who can not afford it, Creighton University’s School of Dentistry’s honor society, Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU), will host the third annual Dr. Ben Kutler Memorial Golf Classic Monday, Aug. 21, at the Platteview Country Club in Bellevue.

Dr. Ben Kutler was a prime example of living the Jesuit mission by serving others and was an Omaha dentist who served as a role model for the profession of dentistry by his caring and compassionate treatment of all, no matter what their financial circumstances.

A 1945 graduate of the Creighton School of Dentistry, he was awarded membership in OKU because of the numerous contributions he made to the dental profession and education. In 1997, he received the Alumni Merit Award for his lifelong devotion to his profession and to his community.

Creighton’s School of Dentistry, which recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, has been seeing patients at its current location, 2802 Webster St., since July 16, 1973. Funds generated by the charity golf outing will be used to help defray the costs incurred in providing dental care for those who can least afford it.

Creighton’s dental students and faculty strive to provide dental care to underprivileged adults and children. Students and faculty participate in a The OneWorld Clinic on a volunteer basis two nights a month, provide hundreds of hours of service to Give Kids a Smile, Kids Explore and have the opportunity for extended service in the Dominican Republic each summer.

The golf classic is sponsored by OKU, a national Dental Honor Society, where the members are selected for outstanding scholarship and character.

Entry fees for the golf outing are $125 for an individual golfer, $500 for a team entry, $500 for a hole sponsor and $30 per person for dinner only. Entry fees include a four person scramble, 18-hole tournament, cart and green fees, box lunch, flag and team prizes, two drink tickets, dinner and awards and a silent auction. For more information about the golf classic and registering to play, contact Dr. Tom Meng in the Creighton University School of Dentistry at 402-280-3405.
