Altman to Speak at Mentoring Luncheon
Dana Altman, Creighton University menís basketball coach, will speak at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands 2006 Friends of Mentoring Luncheon at 11:45 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 24, at the Forte Conference and Banquet Center at inPlay in downtown Omaha.
All proceeds from the luncheon will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands (BBBSM) programs, which match positive role models with at-risk youth in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro-area and sustain over 1,600 Big-Little matches currently in our community. There are more than 100 metro-area children on the waiting list for Big Brothers and Big Sisters to be mentors in their life.
The Friends of Mentoring Luncheon is held by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands each year and BBBSM depends on this fundraiser to help the program continue to grow the number of youth it serves through one-to-one mentoring.
The mission of BBBSM is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with measurable impact. In 2005, the organization served over 2,500 youth, including high school students who act as mentors. Mentoring through Big Brothers Big Sisters is proven to improve school attendance and academic performance for young people. And, children who have mentors are less likely to be involved in juvenile delinquent behavior.
