Mueller’s `Project Welcome' Receives Points Of Light Award

Sister Joan Mueller, Ph.D., Creighton University associate professor of theology, will be honored by the Points of Light Foundation as one of their daily award winners on April 17, 2006.

Professor Mueller founded Project Welcome, a program to provide assistance to Omaha’s Sudanese immigrant population. The Daily Point of Light Award honors individuals and volunteer groups that have made a commitment to connect Americans through service to help critical needs in communities. It focuses on the goals for children and youth set by the President's Summit for America's Future.

Project Welcome began as a collaboration between Sr. Mueller and Operation Others in December 2002. From there, it has grown into a program that touts 300 volunteers who read to pre-schoolers, tutor, raise funds and undertake various activities to help Sudanese families in the Omaha area with a special emphasis on working with children to promote academic excellence.
