Creighton Speech and Debate Team Wins State Championship

Creighton University’s speech and debate team won the 2007 Overall Team Sweepstakes Championship at the Nebraska Intercollegiate Forensic Association State Tournament held in Kearney, Neb., Feb. 16-18.

Throughout the weekend, the team managed to take home three state championship awards in both an individual and team effort.

Arts and Sciences junior Jon Kohlscheen was the team leader in individual first-place finishes. He won state titles in Lincoln Douglas debate and was the tournament champion in Parliamentary debate.

Kohlscheen, Phil Allen, David Skogland and Mike Storey finished in a four-way tie for first place in the Lincoln Douglas debate.

Other team members winning individual state titles included Dan Reeker, an Arts and Sciences senior who was the tournament champion in Extemporaneous Speaking. He also was the recipient of the Spirit of NIFA Award, given by coaches in the state to students who represent good character, service, commitment and good spirit.

With a state title under their belts, the team will hit the road to compete in two national tournaments; the National Parliamentary Debate Association National Tournament March 22-25 in Colorado Springs, Colo., and the National Forensic Association National Tournament in Rome, Ga, April 16-23.
