Wyoming Residents to Study Dentistry at Creighton

For Immediate Release: June 22, 2007

Omaha, Neb.- Creighton University’s School of Dentistry annually will provide spots for five Wyoming students in its dental program as part the Wyoming Dental Student Loan Program. The program, which includes five seats at the University Of Nebraska Medical Center College Of Dentistry as well, is intended to address a shortage of dentists in Wyoming, a state without a dental school.

The initiative, which provides support for dental education costs, begins in fall 2007. It will be administered by the University of Wyoming, College of Health Sciences. Wyoming residents who enroll in the program must agree to practice in Wyoming for three years or reimburse the state for dental education costs, with interest.

"Creighton welcomes the opportunity to assist in advancing Wyoming's dental workforce through this important health education program. By working in partnership with the Wyoming Dental Association, the University of Wyoming and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, everyone benefits," said Steven W. Friedrichsen, D.D.S., dean of Creighton’s School of Dentistry.

Creighton University has a long history of providing dentists for Wyoming and other states that do not have a dental school. The Creighton University School of Dentistry has dental education access programs in Idaho and Utah, is a Western Intrastate Higher Education Commission (WICHE) professional student exchange participant, and currently enrolls approximately 44 percent their students from states without dental schools.
