Creighton University Reaccredited for 10 years
Creighton University has been recommended for reaccredidation for 10 years without additional follow-up planned by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). The NCA evaluators met extensively with faculty, staff and students this past spring and reviewed pertinent documents, including a 200-plus page self-study report, before issuing their official Statement of Affiliation Status in late September.
The NCA, created in 1895, includes member schools from 19 states. In addition to assessing a university’s formal educational activities, it evaluates such things as governance and administration, financial stability, admissions and student services, institutional resources, student learning, institutional effectiveness, and relationships with internal and external constituencies. Each accreditation process requires the university seeking accreditation to conduct an evaluative self-study as well as participate in a site visit by a Higher Learning Commission (HLC) -sponsored accreditation team.
“It is extremely rare that a higher education institution receives a 10-year reaccredidation recommendation with no scheduled focused visits or additional reports. However, of the many compliments given by the NCA, I am most proud of their references to our commitment to service and our mission. They wrote that our identity as a Jesuit, Catholic comprehensive university in the pursuit of truth was palpable across campus,”said the Rev. John P. Schlegel, S. J., president of Creighton University.
The final team report provides comments on five key criteria: mission and integrity; preparing for the future; student learning and effective teaching; acquisition, discovery, and application of knowledge; and engagement and service. In addition, the HLC has asked Creighton University to share its reports and experiences with participants at the 2008 Annual Higher Learning Commission Meeting in Chicago in April 2008.
