Seminar on Creating Safe and Stimulating Living Environments as We Age

Strategies for creating living environments that treat older people with dignity and respect will be the focus of an April 15 seminar presented by the American Disabilities Act (ADA) Committee at Creighton University.

The 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. event, to be held in the V.J. and Angela Skutt Student Center’s Mutual of Omaha Ballroom on the Creighton campus, is open to the Creighton community and the public at no cost. Registration is not required, however individuals who do register in advance will receive a free lunch.

Titled “Ways to Develop Safe and Stimulating Living Environments as We Age,” the seminar will look at legal, lifestyle, housing and other choices older Americans as well as their family caregivers can make to improve their odds of living independently, securely and with dignity. Long-distance care giving, legal matters, and community resources will be among the topics covered.

“In our culture...we talk about those over 65, 75, 85, etc., as a group with similar needs as they age. We all know that individuals age differently, and older persons often face life transitions they never believed would occur,” says Patricia R. Callone, one of the seminar presenters. Callone, Creighton vice president for Institutional Relations, is co-author of “Alzheimer’s Disease – The Dignity Within: A Handbook for Caregivers, Family and Friends” and “A Caregiver’s Guide to Alzheimer’s Disease: 300 Tips for Making Life Easier.”

Other presenters will include Scott F. Pfeifer, a partner with RDG Planning & Design in Omaha; Bev Van Philips, an occupational therapist and executive officer of Bellevue-based Home Access Solutions; Amy Bones, Creighton general counsel and a member of the University’s ADA committee; and Ivy Spataro, senior account executive for Magellan Health Services.

Creighton staff will also talk about the University’s Employee Assistance Program and the ADA website.

To register for lunch, call Justin Burgett at (402) 546-6400 or e-mail justinburgett@creighton.edu by April 11.
