Creighton University Stages Fire Safety Exercise

Creighton University Departments of Residence Life and Environmental Health and Safety intentionally set a residence hall dorm room on fire yesterday. It was only a safety exercise that featured a mock room on a campus parking lot, but this safety demonstration visually highlighted for resident assistants (RAs) the speed a fire can spread and destroy a residence hall room.

More than 60 RAs heard from Omaha Fire Department Captain Dave Poulicek that fires double in size every 30 seconds. The mock room was engulfed in flames within 2 1/2minutes.

Poulicek stressed that there are some simple things to do in the event of a residence hall fire:

  • Close the door of the room.
  • Pay attention to fire alarms.
  • Evacuate the facility immediately, if the fire alarm sounds.

The exercise was videotaped and will be used as a training tool for future resident assistants.
