Creighton University Theology Professor Fr. Lawrence W. Flanagan Dies

The Rev. Lawrence W. Flanagan, S.J., a professor of theology at Creighton University for more than 35 years, died Sunday night. He was 91.

Born in Marcus, Iowa, in October 1916, Flanagan entered St. Stanislaus Seminary in St. Louis in 1939. While in the seminary, he earned a masterís degree in Latin and Greek from Saint Louis University. He was ordained in 1952.

In 1954, Fr. Flanagan came to Creighton University and taught theology for 36 years. During this time, he spent one year studying Theology at the Institut Catholique de Paris in Paris, France. He retired from teaching in 1990 and continued his priestly ministry as a member of the Jesuit Community at Creighton.

Fr. Flanagan was preceded in death by his brother, Earl Flanagan, and sisters Grace Collins and Mary Brady. He is survived by brothers Paul Flanagan and Ray Flanagan, both of Marcus, Iowa.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, at St. Johnís Church on the Creighton campus.. A Mass of Resurrection will take place at 11 a.m., followed by the burial at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery.
