Boys & Girls Clubs LEGO Robotics Teams Consider Global Climate Solutions at Creighton

with Climate Connections, a FIRST LEGO® Challenge at Creighton University

Teams provide real-world global solutions through robot design and research at FIRST LEGO League Omaha Climate Connections Challenge,

On Friday, November 14 at Creighton University, youth from all over the metropolitan area will compete in the Omaha Climate Connections Challenge, a LEGO Robotics event. The tournament will be held in Rigge Science Hall Room 120 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Tournament admission is free to the public.

Volunteers, students, and Club staff have spent weeks coaching 9 to 14 year old members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands LEGO Robotics teams in preparation for the event. At the tournament, team members will demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community. Club alumni, local university, nonprofit and corporate science and technology professionals will serve as a tournament judges and referees. The tournament is open to all LEGO robotics teams in the Omaha metropolitan area.

“For 10 years, our annual challenges have put kids in the driver’s seat to explore and test solutions in a fun and engaging way. We have been fascinated by the enthusiasm, passion, and creativity our kids have demonstrated in rising to the challenges,” said Dean Kamen, FIRST founder. “Our world faces many issues for the future, so why not give kids real-world problems to solve now?”

Climate Connections gives kids a hands-on, real-world experience allowing them to use their imaginations and creativity in combination with science and technology. It provides a process whereby they work together to experience first-hand the challenges that even the top scientists face surrounding this broad and important topic, Kamen continued. “As a result, FIRST LEGO League participants develop the curiosity, creative problem-solving skills, and confidence they need to face tomorrow’s challenges. FLL kids are what our society needs, to build the workforce of the future in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.”

The competition is judged in five areas:

  • research and presentation
  • robot performance
  • technical mechanics of the robot’s construction
  • teamwork
  • gracious professionalism

The highest honor will go to the team that best exemplifies the spirit and values of the program. Certificates and trophies will be awarded.

“Our members love LEGO Robotics. This is our third tournament. We are excited to partner with Creighton University’s Department of Computer Science  and the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s NUTIA group to host the tournament at Creighton University because our members get to show-off their science, technology and teamwork skills,” said Fred Schott, CEO/President of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands.

FIRST worked with the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, professors at MIT and University of Massachusetts, Amherst and experts from LEGO Education, to develop a theme and challenge missions reflective of the hurdles that scientists experience relative to climate study, an issue that has significant and immediate impact on every person on the globe.
