Priest/ Author Featured at Creighton Lecture

The Rev. Uwen Akpan, S. J., internationally recognized author and former student will speak at at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, in Creighton University’s Union Pacific Room in the Reinert-Alumni Memorial Library. His presentation features insights and conversation on his best-selling book “Say You’re One of Them,” and is free to the public. His debut book is a collection of stories, all based in Africa, and features children’s first-person accounts of heart-wrenching situations. In 2005,  Akpan was featured in the New Yorker Magazine Debut Fiction Issue.

 Akpan, was born in the village of Ikot Akpan Eda in southern Nigeria. After studying philosophy and English at Creighton and Gonzaga University, he studied theology for three years at the Catholic University of East Africa. He was ordained as a Jesuit priest in 2003, and received his masters of fine arts in creative writing from the University of Michigan in 2006. He currently serves as a priest in Zimbabwe.

The author began writing articles and poems in the mid’90s but tried his hand at fiction when he returned to Nigeria in 2000. Akpar credits his time in Omaha as a period of self-growth, gaining understanding of human motivations that helped mature his abilities. As a priest,he believes his efforts to convey the word of God, through concrete examples , also helped him write better.
