The Freshmen are Coming! Creighton Set to Welcome Largest Class Ever
Creighton University will welcome more than 1,000 freshman students for the 2009-2010 academic year. This is the first time in the University’s history the freshman class has exceeded 1,000. Last year’s class of 985 was the second largest in school history. The previous record was 989 set in 1979.
Freshman move-in is from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 22. Despite the larger class size, Welcome Week organizers say the move-in process will be as smooth as ever. Plenty of volunteers will be on hand to unload the many vehicles as quickly as possible.
The profile of the freshman class places Creighton among the top five private universities in the Midwest with an undergraduate enrollment of over 4,000 students.
More than 350 students plan to study the social sciences, liberal arts, fine or performing arts, international studies/languages, or journalism. About 50 percent of the freshmen plan careers in research or health care. The School of Nursing expects to set an all-time record with 104 nursing freshmen. The College of Business will exceed more than 170 for one of its largest classes ever—and the academic profile of the business freshmen places the College of Business among the top 10 percent of all universities with business schools. Moving in is just the beginning of Welcome Week for students. The student-run, student-focused program serves as Creighton's official welcome to all new students during the fall semester. Student leaders provide programs to integrate new students into the campus community and culture. Events on Saturday include the President’s Picnic in the evening followed by free ice cream sundaes and the movie Star Trek shown outdoors on the mall and a foam dance party. Other events throughout the week introduce students to the campus, their teachers and the realities of college life though discussions and role playing.
