Martin Luther King Events Raise Consciousness, Spirit

Creighton University celebrated the life and legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. during weeklong activities Jan. 19-23. Highlights included:

  • The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration – a presentation of community awards and recognition of a University-sponsored elementary school poster and essay contest. One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the essay by grand prize winner Madhumitha Janagaraja, who memorized her essay. Read the essay.

    The President's Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award went to sisters Tessie and Barba Edwards, Omaha natives who have brought their zeal for education, health care management improvement and community involvement to Omaha for more than 50 years, and Creighton senior Jamal Jackson, who was honored for his work on the Martin Luther King (MLK) Committee on campus. Jackson is the president of the Creighton University African-American Student Association (CUASA), the Association of Minority Greek Organizations (AMGO) and Diversity Recruitment, Enrichment, and Awareness by Multicultural Students (DREAMS). Four students received the Student Leadership Award, given annually to students who put the ideals of Dr. King into practice.
  • The Ahmanson Ballroom in the Mike and Josie Harper Center was filled to capacity Wednesday, Jan. 21, as Omaha community members and Creighton students, faculty and staff attended the Unity Prayer Luncheon with nationally known speaker the Rev. Robert Smith Jr. Smith is the author of “Doctrine that Dances: Bringing Doctrinal Preaching and Teaching to Life,” and winner of Preaching Magazine’s 2008 Preaching Book of the Year Award.

The final event for the week is a choir concert scheduled for Friday, Jan. 23, at noon in the V.J. and Angela Skutt Student Center. It is free and open to the public. Cake will be served.
