March 20 Memorial Service for Dr. Beverley Mead
Beverley Mead, M.D., former associate dean for academic and faculty affairs and former chair of psychiatry at Creighton University School of Medicine, died Friday, March 13, at the age of 86.
Mead earned his medical degree from the Medical School of the State of South Carolina in 1947, a psychiatric residency at Detroit Receiving Hospital in 1951, and a master’s of science degree in psychiatry at the University of Utah College of Medicine in 1958. He joined the then Creighton University College of Medicine in 1965 as chair of the Department of Psychiatry, a position he held until 1977. He served as associate dean for academic and faculty affairs at the School of Medicine, 1980-88. In 1986, he was named emeritus chairman and professor of psychiatry.
“As associate dean, Dr. Mead did a terrific job with curriculum development and faculty scholarship and research during a period of significant growth and expansion for the Creighton School of Medicine. … Beverley was pleasure to work with. He had a great sense of humor and a way of making his colleagues and students feel at ease,” said Richard L. O’Brien, M.D., former Creighton dean of medicine and vice president for health sciences.
Mead is survived by his wife, Ruth, and nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 20, at St. John Catholic Church on the Creighton campus.
