Cavel to Receive Creighton Dental School 2010 Alumni Merit Award
Creighton will present the Alumni Merit Award, to W. Thomas Cavel, D.D.S., at its annual Reunion Weekend at 6:30 p.m. on April 23 at the Harper Center, Ahmanson Ballroom on the Creighton campus.
Cavel, a 1970 graduate of Creighton’s School of Dentistry, is the inaugural chairholder of the Dr. Raymond W. Shaddy Endowed Chair in Operative Dentistry. He has been an educator for more than 38 years and exemplifies many of the ideals of Creighton University through his leadership in dental education, research and service to others.
He began his teaching career in 1972 following a short time in the U.S. Army. He has held numerous positions on the faculty including chair of the Department of Operative Dentistry from 1986 to 1994, assistant director of clinics from 1985 to 1995 and chair of the Department of General Dentistry from 1999 to 2007. In 1999, the American Association of Dental Examiners named him “Citizen of the Year.” Cavel was inducted into the Nebraska Dental Hall of Fame in 2007.
An active member of church and community, he has made numerous trips to the Institute for Latin American Concern (ILAC), giving dental care and service to those less fortunate.
The Creighton Alumni Merit Award is one of the highest honors given by Creighton’s schools and colleges. Recipients must be degreed alumni of Creighton, have provided distinguished service to the University or their communities that clearly exemplifies the University credo, and exhibit personal qualities that indicate high moral principles guided by the Jesuit ideal of being men and women for others.
