Marcil to be Recognized with Heartland Hero Award

Dr. William Marcil, associate professor of psychiatry at Creighton University School of Medicine, has earned a 2010 Hero of the Heartland award from the American Red Cross Heartland Chapter. He is one of five awardees who will be recognized at a March 3 luncheon in Omaha.

Marcil will receive the award in the “Good Samaritan” category for his role in expanding the Magis Clinic in 2007 to include psychiatric services. The clinic, operated by Creighton medical students and located at the Siena-Francis House, offers free medical care to people who are homeless and medically underinsured.

“Dr. Marcil donates his time at the clinic to provide free psychiatric care to the underserved, homeless and mentally ill. Dr. Marcil also supervises the clinic operations…(his) unfaltering presence and non-judgmental attitude have made life-changing differences in all those he serves in urban Omaha through the Magis Clinic,” according to the American Red Cross.
