Creighton Nursing Dean Named to National Post

Eleanor V. Howell, Ph.D., R.N., dean of the Creighton University School of Nursing, has been elected to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Board of Directors for a two-year term.

Howell joined Creighton in 1996 and has served as dean since 2003.

Under her leadership, the school has undertaken a number of initiatives designed to broaden the scope of educational opportunities available to Creighton nursing students and prepare them for the rapidly evolving field of nursing. The school is the only nursing school in Nebraska to offer a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. Also, following its involvement in a nationwide AACN pilot project, the school launched a new nursing program called the Clinical Nurse LeaderSM.

A former chair of the Nebraska Assembly of Nursing Deans and Directors, Howell has also held academic appointments at Auburn University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She has been active in AACN as a member of the Program Committee, chair of the Executive Development Series Subcommittee, and grassroots liaison for the state of Nebraska.

Howell holds a bachelorís degree in nursing from the Medical College of Georgia, a masterís degree in cardiovascular nursing from UAB, and a doctorate in administration Ė health services from UAB.
