Robert C. Allen, M.D., has been named chair of the Department of Pathology at Creighton University School of Medicine, effective Jan. 3.

Allen joined Creighton’s School of Medicine in 2005 as a professor of pathology. He is medical director of Creighton Medical Laboratories (CML) and director of Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at Omaha Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Allen has spent much of his career actively engaged in administration, teaching, clinical research and patient care. At Creighton, residents honored him with the 2006 Outstanding Teaching Award in the Department of Pathology.

He is internationally recognized for his research in neutrophil function and has patented a number of diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

Prior to joining Creighton, Allen served on the faculty of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta (1999-2005). While in Atlanta, he also was pathology chief at Grady Memorial Hospital. He served as medical director for SmithKline Beecham Clinical Laboratories in San Antonio (1993-98).

Allen earned his medical degree and a doctorate in biochemistry from Tulane University in New Orleans.

He succeeds Roger Brumback, M.D., as chair of pathology. During his 10-year term as chair, Brumback’s accomplishments included creating a separate Creighton Medical Laboratories reference laboratory operation in the Criss Building on the Creighton campus.
