Creighton Lecture Focuses on Raising Healthy Children

Creighton University’s 52nd annual Alpha Sigma Nu William F. Kelley S. J. Endowed Lecture will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Hixson-Lied Auditorium of the Mike and Josie Harper Center for Student Life and Learning on Creighton’s campus. Featured speaker Daniel L. Daly, Ph. D., executive vice president and director of youth care, Boys Town, will highlight adolescent mental health and science-based programs with positive outcomes in addressing challenges facing today’s parents.

Daly is considered one of the principal architects of Boys Town’s science-based youth care and education programs, directing the Youth Care Department of the world famous Father Flanagan's Boys' Home. Boys Town is one of the largest providers of services to at-risk children in the United States. Influential on national policy regarding child care and service programs, Daly has enhanced custodial, palliative care to include research-based services.

Starting at Boys Town in 1975 as a director of training, he assumed his current duties in 2005. Daly has held professorships at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Kodiak Community College in Alaska, and Kansas University, and currently supervises psychology interns at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. A recognized expert on juvenile delinquency, adolescent mental health, and related evidence-based programs, he has presented over 150 papers at scientific and service conferences, and authored or co-authored over 80 articles, book chapters and training manuals.

Inducted in Alpha Sigma Nu while in college, Dr. Daly graduated magna cum laude from Xavier University in 1969, and became a West Virginia University foundation fellow, where he acquired a doctorate in clinical psychology in 1973. He started his post-student career as a U.S. Army Captain at Irvin Army Hospital in Ft. Riley, Kansas, working with Viet Nam veterans and their dependents.
