Creighton Conference Looks at Health Care Disparities and Infant Mortality

Health care experts, community leaders and others will gather Saturday, April 9, at Creighton University to explore what can be done to lessen health care disparities that contribute to a higher incidence of infant mortality in some ethnic populations.

The conference, entitled “Addressing Health Disparities: Focus on Infant Mortality,” will be held 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Rigge Science Building auditorium, located south of 26th and Burt streets. The event is free.

To register, call 402.280.5659 or 800.548.CMED or go online at; a continental breakfast and lunch will be provided for those who preregister by April 1. Day-of-event registration will be accepted as space allows.

Experts will speak on ethics, public health policies, clinical practices, and society and how each leads to disparities in infant mortality.

The keynote speaker will be Ayman El-Mohandes, M.D., dean and professor of epidemiology and health promotion at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College of Public Health. He will speak on “Behavioral and Psychosocial Risk during Pregnancy: Does an Integrated Intervention Make a Difference?”

Between 2005-2009, the infant death rate in Douglas County, Neb., was nearly three times higher for African American infants (11.9 per 1,000 live births for children under age 1) than for white (4.7 per 1,000) and Hispanic (4.9 per 1,000) infants, according to Douglas County’s 2010 Community Report. The report noted that low birth weight and premature birth accounted for many of the deaths.

The conference is sponsored by Creighton University’s Office of Health Sciences Multicultural and Community Affairs, Center for Promoting Health and Health Equality, Center for Health Policy and Ethics, and Continuing Medical Education. Continuing medical education credit is available.

Creighton University is a Jesuit, Catholic university bridging health, law, business and the arts and sciences for a more just world.
