Creighton TePoel Lecture to Focus on Mandated Federal Budget Cuts

Russell Sullivan, Democratic Staff Director for the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance, will deliver the annual TePoel Lecture at the Creighton University School of Law from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28 in Room 124 of the law school.

Sullivan will give an insider's perspective to the deficit commission, giving both a sense of how we reached this critical point where nearly every federal program could be impacted and providing an outlook of possible outcomes of the commission's work and beyond.

The U.S. Senate Finance Committee has jurisdiction over all Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and taxes. As staff director of that committee, Sullivan oversees the development and advancement of all legislation in these areas.

A tax attorney by training, Sullivan has played a pivotal role in every major tax and health measure over the past decade, including the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, and the Affordable Care Act, the health reform bill that was signed into law in spring 2010. Currently, he spends most of his time on the Congressional Deficit Commission. This so-called “Super Committee” comprised of 12 members of Congress, including the Chairman of the Finance Committee, has been tasked with recommending a massive deficit reduction package in the coming few months. It is expected that nearly every aspect of governmental tax and spending will be discussed and considered throughout the course of these Super Committee discussions.

The TePoel Lecture Series is named in honor of Dean Louis TePoel, teacher, scholar, and academic administrator, who served on the Creighton Law School faculty from 1907 to 1947 and as Dean from 1920 to 1947. Inaugurated in 1975 with a lecture given by Professor Harold J. Berman of the Harvard Law School, the series has featured many legal scholars of national and international reputation.

Sullivan’s work with disadvantaged youth and his commitment to serving others embodies Creighton University’s Jesuit mission.

The Law School takes great pride in the TePoel Lecture Series. It is a primary means by which Creighton continues to provide its students and the Omaha legal community with the best in legal education.

The lecture is part of a weeklong schedule of activities celebrating the inauguration Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., as the University’s 24th president.
