Three Honored with Mary Lucretia and Sarah Emily Creighton Awards

Shayla Covington, a senior in the Creighton University College of Arts and Sciences; Ann Franco Laughlin, Ph.D., professor in the School of Nursing and on-call relief nurse for Creighton’s Jesuit community; and Catherine Weiss Pedersen, retiring marriage preparation coordinator with Campus Ministry, will receive the 2013 Mary Lucretia and Sarah Emily Creighton Awards during University’s annual Committee on the Status of Women Founders Week luncheon at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 7 in the Ahmanson Ballroom in the Harper Center.

Covington is considered a leader among her peers, committed to creating a campus environment supportive of women, as well as students of all sexual orientations. She serves as a student coordinator with the Lieben Center for Women, and is a resident advisor. She is president of the Gender and Sexuality Alliance group on campus.

Laughlin is an accomplished nurse, educator and researcher. Laughlin took a leadership role in designing Creighton’s School Health Program, in which more than 9,000 students at area Catholic schools receive free health screenings and Creighton nursing students receive valuable hands-on experience.

Pedersen is a 24-year veteran of Creighton’s Campus Ministry office. She is being honored for her supportive compassion, guidance and leadership with individuals, couples and student groups, and her daily efforts to help Creighton students thrive in a university environment.

The Mary Lucretia and Sarah Emily Creighton Award is presented to a faculty, staff, administrator, or student, who exemplifies the following criteria: she or he has created an environment supportive of achievement for women; has encouraged women faculty, administrators, staff or students in the development of their talents, or has served as a role model of accomplishment for women
