Creighton Family Medicine Residency Honored for Immunization Work

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Foundation has honored Creighton University's Family Medicine Residency Program with a 2013 Pfizer Immunization Award for their work. The annual award recognizes those family medicine residency programs who best overcome barriers to immunization in underserved communities. Creighton was one of nine programs from across the country selected to receive the recognition this year.

"We are proud to recognize these programs, which have made it their mission to raise awareness and protect their communities from infectious diseases," said Craig M. Doane, AAFP Foundation executive director and secretary. "These programs share our vision of improving health for everyone, and we hope they will serve as examples of best practices for others who look to increase vaccination rates in their communities."

The selection committee chose this year's recipients based on their ability to find creative, team-based solutions to increase immunization rates. Creighton was specifically recognized for the program's implementation of a comprehensive system to increase immunization rates in a medically underserved population.

"The patient population we addressed is very unique, with a majority being refugees," explained Pankaj Agrawal, M.D., chief resident for the Family Medicine Residency Program. "They have significant social, cultural, linguistic and financial barriers."

The residents have been working diligently in the clinic to improve immunization rates. They have seen constant increase in the rates since 2010.

The AAFP Foundation serves as the philanthropic arm of the American Academy of Family Physicians and advances the values of Family Medicine by promoting humanitarian, educational and scientific initiatives that improve the health of all people.

Creighton University is a Jesuit, Catholic university bridging health, law, business and the arts and sciences for a more just world.
