Creighton University Center for Health Policy and Ethics Launches Podcast

The Center for Health Policy and Ethics at Creighton University and the Ethics Center at Alegent Creighton Health launched a new audio podcast series, Bioethics Beyond the Bedside, on Friday, Feb. 28, 2014. The series is dedicated to raising awareness regarding the ethical issues encountered in outpatient care settings. Mark Goodman, M.D., associate professor of medicine at Creighton University School of Medicine, will host alongside Leslie Kuhnel, MPA, MSHCE from the Alegent Creighton Health Ethics Center.

Goodman joined the Center for Health Policy and Ethics as a faculty associate in the fall of 2000. He has practiced medicine since 1988, including two years of work with the Lamba Association in Showak, Sudan during which he served as medical director of their refugee clinics and another two years at the Charles Drew Health Clinic in Omaha. He is currently on the board of directors of the Nebraska AIDS Project.

Kuhnel has been with the Alegent Creighton Health Ethics Center since 2003, leading various healthcare ethics initiatives and providing numerous ethics education programs for professionals and the community. She facilitates several ethics committees for Alegent Creighton Health and frequently consults with clinical staff, patients and their families about the ethical dimensions of healthcare delivery.

In the inaugural episode, which launches Feb. 28, Goodman and Kuhnel speak with Amy Haddad, Ph.D., director of the Center for Health Policy and Ethics and program director of the Master's in Health Care Ethics program, about the ethical challenges in outpatient settings and the overall purpose of the podcast series. Future episodes include day-to-day challenges in a doctor's office, challenges in end-of-life care, the ethics of firing patients, as well as ethical issues in refugee, occupational therapy and outpatient surgery settings.
