‘World Peace’ will open Lied Art Gallery at Creighton in 2017

One of the painting's in Alicia Scherich's "World Peace" exhibition opening at the Lied Art Gallery, Jan. 20.An artist with an exquisite sense of the interconnected, especially between humanity and its earthly home, will be featured in the Lied Art Gallery’s first exhibition of the new year.

Alicia Sancho Scherich has been drawing and painting for six decades, attending Creighton University and studying under noted painter and professor of art John Thein, MFA. Her show at the University, running Jan. 20 through Feb. 12, is titled “World Peace,” and will feature four tetrads (four groups of four paintings) Scherich has painted, depicting the natural world and humankind’s beautiful and sometimes brutal responses to it.

“For me, painting involves a profound thought that has to be communicated to our fellow residents of the world,” Scherich said. “Painting is a language without barriers, instant communication with humankind. Once something important attracts my attention or defies my reason, I hold that thought until an image emerges. My research of the mindless killing of whales brought me to the words of our great Jacques Cousteau, ‘A crimson mantle floating on the sea.’ What a moving and powerful statement.”

Born in Madrid in 1934, Scherich graduated from the Institute of Professional Teaching Women in Madrid with a degree in fashion design. She also studied drawing with her father, an instructor at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid. Marrying Ronald Scherich, an airman stationed in Spain, in 1959, the artist and her husband moved shortly thereafter to Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, Nebraska.

The Lied Art Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and again from 5 to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. An artist reception will be held Jan. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibit will also be featured during Creighton’s Founders Week Celebrations, with the gallery open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Feb. 8.

Creighton University is a Jesuit, Catholic university bridging health, law, business and the arts and sciences for a more just world.
