Omaha native Joanna Young to lead masterclass at Creighton, Feb. 12

Creighton University’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts will host a special masterclass with a Broadway actress and Omaha native.

Feb. 12 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in Room 207 of the Lied Education Center for the Arts, Joanna Young will lead a group of Creighton student actors as she discusses techniques and talks about her experiences in a life filled with theater. The class will touch on song interpretation from Broadway literature.

The public is invited to attend and observe the class, free of charge.

Young joined the national tour of “Les Miserables” while still a student at New York University. She made her Broadway debut in “Grease!,” at various times playing Rizzo, Marty, Jan, and Cha Cha, while understudying such stars as Lucy Lawless, Jasmine Guy, Sheena Easton and Deborah Gibson.

Most recently, Young understudied Sutton Foster as Janet in the Broadway production of “The Drowsy Chaperone.”

Young has performed in numerous concerts and cabarets in New York City and across the country, including a stint back home with the Omaha Symphony.

Young is also a member of the Midtown Direct Rep, through which she helped develop the musical “Rated P...for Parenthood.” Joanna starred in the Off-Broadway transfer of “Rated P” at the Westside Theatre in New York City, and can be heard on the original cast recording.

Creighton University is a Jesuit, Catholic university bridging health, law, business and the arts and sciences for a more just world.
