‘Bones’ the theme of Creighton’s next Research from All Angles program

'Bones' is the theme of the next Research from All Angles at Creighton University. The Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship at Creighton University hosts the latest installment of its series, Research from All Angles, Feb. 24 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Skutt Student Center, Room 104.

This All Angles event showcases Creighton researchers who are working with bones in one way or another and will feature Robert Heaney, M.D., from the School of Medicine, Joan Lappe, Ph.D., from the College of Nursing, Kristin Fitzgerald and Erin Averett, Ph.D., from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Heaney, professor of medicine and the John A. Creighton University Professor Emeritus, is an osteoporosis researcher and has spent more than 50 years doing groundbreaking research into human nutrition. He has most recently been at work on the healthful contributions of Vitamin D to human bones and overall health.

Also at work on osteoporosis research, Lappe is associate dean for research and the Beirne Endowed Chair in Nursing. Lappe is also a Vitamin D advocate, especially for people who live in northerly climes and are not always getting enough of the vitamin from the sun’s rays.

Bones have a different context for Fitzgerald and Averett, who look at them not from a medical standpoint, but a socio-cultural and historical one.

Fitzgerald is as an anthropology instructor in the Department of Cultural and Social Studies specializing in Native American rituals, beliefs and practices.

Averett is an archaeologist and professor in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts and is assistant director of the Athienou Archaeological Project on Cyprus. Her most recent research has focused on digital archaeology and the preservation of excavation sites by digital means.

The event is free and open to the public.

Creighton University is a Jesuit, Catholic university bridging health, law, business and the arts and sciences for a more just world.
