St. Francis Day celebrations to honor sustainability efforts at Creighton

St. FrancisHonoring the feast day of St. Francis, the Creighton University Sustainability Council, the Schlegel Center for Service and Justice, the Department of Campus Ministry, the Energy Club, the Energy Technology Program, the Environmental Science Program and the Sustainability Program will host the fifth annual St. Francis Day celebrations from Sept. 19 - Oct. 7.

The program will begin with the student-led Green Dorm initiative from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4. Student teams will be visit Creighton student housing with incentives to encourage conversation and commitments related to St. Francis and sustainable issues.

A lecture series kicks off on Sept. 21 in the Hixson-Lied Science building G04 auditorium, with a lecture from Joshua Kneifel, an economist in the applied Economics Office at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), on “Measuring Sustainability in Buildings.” He will discuss tools developed by the engineering laboratory at NIST, that assist the public in making sustainability-based decisions when choosing building products.

On Sept. 30, Creighton faculty and students will join a panel of Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo experts to discuss sustainability initiatives at the zoo at 1 p.m. in the Harper Center auditorium. Stephanie Huettner, the assistant general curator and coordinator of the zoo’s sustainability efforts, will lead the panel.

The feast day of St. Francis of Assisi will be celebrated at a noon mass at St. John’s Church on Creighton’s campus, on Oct. 4. Catholics across the country are encouraged to take the St. Francis Pledge for Creation and the Poor, and to join the Catholic Climate Covenant. The pledge is a promise to live the faith by protecting God’s creation and advocating on behalf of people in poverty, who face the harshest impact of global climate change. Celebrations will conclude with a campus barbecue on Oct. 7 from 11:30-1:30, outside of the Skutt Student Center. During lunch, the Sustainability Council will present the Spirit of St. Francis Award, given to a Creighton student, faculty, staff or administrative member, who is engaged in developing campus sustainability efforts.
