Pathway program working to mold more early childhood educators

Creighton University and Metropolitan Community College (MCC) are partnering to offer students a degree pathway to their goals as teachers in early childhood education.

The AAS Early Childhood Education to BS Elementary Education Pathway allows students who have earned the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in early childhood education at MCC may be eligible to earn a Bachelor of Science in elementary education at Creighton through the College of Professional Studies and the College of Arts and Sciences.

“This partnership is a great step for Creighton, Metropolitan Community College and our community as a whole,” said Jean Hearn, a resident assistant professor in early childhood education at Creighton and director of the pathway program. “We continue to need more early childhood educators in our community and our nation. This pathway helps prepare the future teachers and leaders who are committed to giving children the best start possible.”

To be considered for admission to the program, applicants must graduate from MCC with a minimum 2.75 grade-point average, complete the AAS degree in early childhood education with a grade of C or higher in all courses applicable to the degree, and achieve passing scores in the PRAXIS Core Academic Skills for Educators Exam in all three components: Reading (156), Writing (162), and Math (150).

To earn a degree from Creighton, students are required to complete a minimum total of 128 credit hours, with at least 48 hours completed in residence at the University. A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required for graduation with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education.
