Creighton University selects new provost

Tom MurrayFollowing a nationwide search that began in fall 2016, Creighton University President the Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, announced today that Tom Murray, PhD, has been selected provost of the University effective May 1. Dr. Murray has been serving as the interim provost since last summer.

“As soon as Dr. Murray was appointed interim provost, his service to the University as chief academic officer has been notably effective,” said Fr. Hendrickson. “In addition, I admire Dr. Murray’s deep understanding of our institutional complexity and Catholic, Jesuit identity, his ability to both complement and challenge me and other campus leaders in considering options, and a style of leadership I recognize as consultative and inquisitive, as well as fair and decisive.”

Dr. Murray brings more than 35 years of academic experience to the provost position. He joined Creighton as chair of the Department of Pharmacology in the School of Medicine in 2006 after leaving the University of Georgia, where he was a Distinguished Research Professor and head of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

As a researcher and scholar, Dr. Murray has published more than 180 publications in the areas of signal transduction and neuropharmacology, and has received continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health since 1986. While at Creighton, his research has generated $4.7 million in extramural awards to his laboratory. He has served as Creighton’s associate dean for research in the School of Medicine and as campus associate vice provost for research and scholarship. This past year, he completed his 19th year as a chair of an academic department.

Dr. Murray leads an academic division at Creighton that includes nine schools and colleges – School of Medicine; School of Pharmacy and Health Professions; School of Dentistry; College of Nursing; College of Arts and Sciences; Heider College of Business; School of Law; College of Professional Studies; and the Graduate School.
