Creighton offers assistance to Union Pacific’s Omaha employees impacted by layoffs through dedicated scholarship program

Following the announcement by Union Pacific that the Fortune 500 company will eliminate 750 jobs, Creighton University is reinstating a comprehensive program to provide networking assistance, scholarships and tuition deferment for degree completion, career advancement or retraining. The Omaha Loyalty Tuition Scholarship was first implemented by Creighton in 2015 after ConAgra announced that it was moving its headquarters to Chicago.

For decades, Creighton University has treasured its many partnerships with Union Pacific and its employees. To assist during this time of transition for those facing job loss, or to provide additional training for remaining UP employees following the company’s restructuring, Creighton is offering the dedicated scholarship program.

The tuition scholarship is open to individuals who were employed full-time by Union Pacific on Aug. 16, 2017, are age 21 or over, and who wish to complete a bachelor’s or master’s degree, or graduate certificate. Eligible students will receive a 25 percent scholarship for select academic programs when enrolling on or before the start of the 2018 Fall semester. Flexible payment options will be offered. The University will also consider work experience as prior learning assessments and may waive admission testing – such as the GMAT – based on work experience.

“Union Pacific is an upstanding and impressive company locally and globally, and a great friend and partner with Creighton University,” said Creighton President the Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ. “As with other companies making important decisions about their futures, it is unfortunate that some employees will be facing a transition in their professional and personal lives. Creighton is committed to providing assistance to individuals who are our colleagues and friends in the Omaha community.”

For more information on the scholarship, contact Vice Provost Tricia Brundo Sharrar, JD, at 402-280-4076, or go to https://www.creighton.edu/omaha-loyalty to learn more.
