Pedestrian bridge construction to affect campus parking, traffic

Note: due to high winds in the area, crane assembly has been delayed. Revised dates are below, updated Dec. 14.

Construction of the new pedestrian bridge that will span U.S. Highway 75 from the former Creighton University Medical Center to a tower landing on the western edge of the California Mall will begin on campus property Monday, Dec. 11. The construction of piers and a landing tower on Creighton property will support the pedestrian bridge superstructure expected to be completed by June 1, 2018.

A section of Wareham Parkway west of the Gallagher parking lot will be closed for the duration of the project and traffic will be detoured through the Gallagher parking lot. In preparation for this detour, on Monday, Dec. 11, a temporary road will be constructed through the parking lot island west of the Dowling Hall Humanities building. This temporary crossover road will allow large delivery vehicles and shuttle services to divert back to Wareham Parkway. See this link for a map of affected areas.

Note: The following dates have been revised. On Monday, Dec. 18, from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m., all of Wareham Parkway will be closed to all traffic and parking from the intersection of 24th and Cass streets to the construction site. No parking will be permitted along this stretch of Wareham Parkway during this time, beginning at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 17, as crane equipment is assembled at the construction site. After the crane has been assembled, Wareham Parkway will re-open. See this link for a map of affected areas.

Understanding this project will affect traffic and parking on our campus, the pedestrian bridge will be an important link to connect NuStyle’s residential development (The Landing) at the former CUMC site to Creighton’s campus. The affected parking areas west of Gallagher Hall and the Humanities building will be restored following completion of the bridge.

With significant construction around the site of the new School of Dentistry building, student parking in the central part of campus was challenging this fall. When Burt Street re-opened last month and work at the north end of Lot 26 wrapped up, over 50 additional parking spaces became available. As of Monday, Dec. 11, an additional 150 student parking spaces will be available in Lots 28 and 38. These lots can be accessed from 23rd Street between Burt and Cuming streets. See a map here.
