Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at Creighton University suspended until 2025

Following an extensive investigation and a conduct review hearing on March 17, 2017, officials at Creighton University informed representatives of the campus chapter of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity today that it has been suspended until 2025.

No fraternity activity of any kind is allowed until the suspension expires, but the Phi Kappa Psi headquarters may contact Creighton in January 2024 to begin the process of re-colonization planning efforts.

While conducting a separate investigation involving a student who allegedly injured two students on the morning of Feb. 11, 2017, in Creighton’s Gallagher Residence Hall, it was reported that the student suspect had been with members of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at their off-campus house the evening of Feb. 10.

Following additional and unrelated reports of underage drinking, distribution of drugs, and hazing, Tanya Winegard, PhD, vice provost for Student Life, suspended the chapter on Feb. 13 while the review of chapter activities continued.

A thorough investigation of the fraternity by Creighton’s Center for Student Integrity found multiple, serious violations of the University’s code of conduct and anti-hazing policies, which can be found here.

Members of the University Committee on Student Discipline took into consideration the long-standing relationship the University has with Phi Kappa Psi. Its decision to impose an eight-year suspension came after concluding the systemic issues within the local chapter must be addressed, while hoping the relationship between Creighton and Phi Kappa Psi can be restored in the future.

Phi Kappa Psi’s national organization has been fully cooperating with Creighton officials during the investigation.

Creighton University’s Greek Life community, which includes 14 sororities and fraternities, comprises 45 percent of the undergraduate student population. In 2016, Greek Life members at Creighton participated in 17,767 hours of service. That same year, the sororities and fraternities raised $160,900 for community organizations.

In the fall of 2016, the all-Greek GPA was 3.48 compared to the all-University GPA of 3.38.

Additionally, the sorority GPA was 3.5, while the fraternity GPA was 3.34.
