Giving Day Continues to Grow

Giving DayOn April 10, Bluejays came together to give back, raising a record number of gifts for Creighton University in the process.

For the second annual Creighton Giving Day, 3,208 individual donors gave more than $877,000 to the areas of campus that mean the most to them. That’s about 500 more donors and $150,000 more in gifts than last year.

Giving Day donors consisted of students and alumni, faculty and staff, friends and family. Bluejays donated from all corners of the country, raising funds for initiatives that will directly impact students. More than 80 programs were supported through Giving Day.

Many alumni gave back to the very causes they benefited from while attending Creighton. Recent alumni were among the most generous donors.

When Audel Salazar, BA’16, MA’17, learned that he could give to the Creighton Intercultural Center on Giving Day, he dove at the chance. For years, the center (formerly known as the Office of Multicultural Affairs) was Salazar’s home away from home.

Salazar is part Native American and part Mexican. When he first came to Creighton from his small Nebraska town of Decatur, he didn’t find many people with a similar background or set of experiences. Then he found the center, which provides a space for people from various cultural groups to come together, share their stories and create community.

“I always felt like I could go there and be myself without being out of place,” he said. “It was so comfortable and homey.”

It helped Creighton feel like home, too. So much so that Salazar never left. He now works as an instructional designer for Creighton’s Teaching and Learning Center.

“It’s just hard to leave Creighton,” he said.

Ed Nunez, BA’18, agrees wholeheartedly.

After a year away working in campus ministry at Arrupe College of Loyola University Chicago, the Milwaukee native is moving back to Omaha this summer, to get his master’s degree in ministry, and be a graduate assistant in the Schlegel Center for Service and Justice (SCSJ).

Nunez can’t wait to get back to Creighton. In the meantime, he took part in Giving Day, supporting Campus Ministry and SCSJ, two organizations that defined his time at the University.

“They are very, very close to me,” he said. “The person I am today is because of those two offices and the people who work there. And I’m excited that I’m coming back to be a part of the Creighton community.”

But until then, Giving Day gave him the chance to feel that Creighton feeling again. Seeing the great collective impact of so many Bluejays reminded him what he loves about the University.

Plus, it was just fun to follow along. Nunez said he kept repeatedly refreshing the Giving Day website throughout the day, just to see how things were going, to watch the number of donors and gifts climb.

“It was amazing,” he said. “It was like, ‘Oh my gosh, this just keeps going up!’”
