Carrig Recognized by National Collegiate Honors Council, Habitat for Humanity of Omaha

Molly CarrigAfter being named 2018 Honors Student of the Year by the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC), Creighton University senior Margaret “Molly” Carrig has been selected as the 2019 Outstanding Volunteer of the Year by Habitat for Humanity of Omaha.

The awards reflect a student who has reached unusual heights, both in academics and laboratory work, as well as involvement with her fellow students and with the world beyond Creighton’s campus, according to Jeffrey Hause, PhD, director of the Creighton Honors Program.

In a letter sent to the NCHC nominating Carrig for the student of the year award, Hause said Carrig may be the best student leader Creighton’s Honors Program has seen since its creation in 2005.

“When Molly undertakes a project, whether for Honors, or for Habitat for Humanity, or for our Classics program, she is single minded in her determination to bring it not just to completion but to make it spectacular,” he wrote. “However much you think she will succeed, she will surprise you by making her work even better.”

Carrig, a senior in biochemistry with a minor in classical languages, is a native of Elm Grove, Wisconsin. She is currently the vice president of operations for the student board executive committee of Creighton’s Honors Program and the organizer of a contingent of 20 students that volunteers Saturdays at Habitat for Humanity ReStore outlets at 108th Street and Maple Road and 24th and Leavenworth streets.

Carrig said she greatly values Creighton’s Honors Program and strives to help current and prospective Creighton students understand its value.

“I’ve really worked hard to help other students who might not realize the opportunities the Honors Program opens up for them,” she says. “It says ‘Honors’ on your diploma at graduation, but what it means to be an Honors student, and what you’re able to do at Creighton through the program, learning what our philosophy is, that’s the real value of the Honors Program.”
